Relating to deep inward feelings rather than to the intellect: “the voters’ visceral fear of change”.

On an unrelated note: chalk lettering is RIDIC, but super fun. Will revisit that in the future for sure. A total personal lettering hero (who is a NINJA with chalk!) is Dana Tanamachi. Check that gal out, she’s incredible!

Experiencing Disney

I have been back home for a week now, after an incredibly wonderful vacation with my husband, visiting friends and taking a break from the hectic pace of the regular world. On our trip, we we lucky enough to have an entire day (read: 12 full fun-filled hours!) at Disneyland, the happiest place on earth.

Now, this is a place that, when broken down to its basest parts, would generally send me running for the hills. Long lines. High prices. Scads of people. Scads of children. All of which adds up to.. a totally amazing, fun-filled experience? Disney does a pretty amazing job at their experience design; they take nearly of all of the negatives and counteract them in the most incredible way.

Long lines? A great opportunity to really brand the experience. The Matterhorn is surrounded by trees, cheerful signage tells you how to board.

The Indiana Jones ride becomes a trek deep into the temple, filled with stepping stones to avoid, crates that can only be filled with the greatest of treasures, and suddenly, you’re at the end of the line. Even when the ride first opened, and the wait times were counted in hours, they provided an amazing experience with a cypher to the glyphs in the walls. Time was spent bonding with your fellow adventurers, figuring out what messages were hidden in the temple. On our trip last week, the lines were mercifully short, but it was still a thrill to pass the glyphs on our way to Indie.

Another favorite, Star Tours has just about the best experience design ever in their line. While waiting for the ride itself, you’re already enjoying time with C3PO, R2D2, and a whole slew of other characters to make your time in line more enjoyable.

Even more than just the excellent design of the rides, the park itself is beautifully designed as well. Each area of the park is chock-full of design details that really transport you to the land that you’re in. Adventureland is full of tiki statues and even the plant life changes to feel more exotic. Fantasy land is perfectly fanciful, with colorful details everywhere, and of course, the castle. At night, it gets even better with the castle and ponds becoming more and more incredibly colorful and lovely.

We were pretty lucky on our trip not to have too many lines to deal with, but truth be told, I sort of wish I would have had more time to stand still and take pictures. And if that isn’t a sign of good experience design, I don’t know what is.
